Victoria Beckham Fall 2011

“Structured will always exist in my handbag line, but I felt it was the right time to add some volume while softening the silhouettes,” Victoria Beckham told Bag Snob following her fall show. “I think women want to be confident and comfortable with their clothes AND bags.” This season, along with the easier shapes, Beckham developed her bag line to include practical-looking duffels and totes, but done in super soft cashmere and leather. My favorite piece from the collection is an over-the-shoulder duffel that has a nomadic vibe to it–if you’re version of wandering the lands is covered in suede. The new shopper tote maintains a somewhat rigid shape but gently expands out to increase volume. And while I admit I like her first season structured bags more, these, judging by retailers’ reported 100 percent sell-throughs, will be a big hit.

Wall Street Journal Blog: Bag Snob Weighs In on Fashion Week

Read what Kelly and Tina have to say about the Fall 2011 collections Of all the snobs who roamed Lincoln Center during New York Fashion Week, we are partial to Kelly Cook and Tina Craig, the pair are behind the blog family Snob Global Media.Originating in 2005 with Bag Snob, a website serving up designer handbag reviews, the pair has since expanded their reach to include clothes, beauty, jewelry, shoes and more.Ms. Cook and Ms. Craig saw nearly every catwalk this week, closely eyeing every facet of the collections. We asked them for their take on the clothes–and of course, the bags.Edited excerpts:WSJ HEARD ON THE RUNWAY: What was your favorite show of the week?Tina: Derek Lam. It’s just so wearable. There’s drama but it’s not like, “Oh my gosh, I can’t wear that in my real life.” There are great little jackets, there’s fur. It’s just easy, it’s casual, it’s chic.Kelly: You come to the shows and you are looking for drama. There’s not a lot of drama this season. Thakoon was drama in the sense that everything is really showy but not very wearable. DVF was very, very different. They threw away all their patterns and they had these gaucho type loose tops, kimono style. Cool jump suits and a lot of separates. For once, it wasn’t all about the print, it was about the cut, the fabric.WSJ: Did anything surprise you this week?Kelly: This puffer jacket gown at Thakoon–red and blue plaid, like a big puffer jacket, but it was a full-length gown. It’s showy. It’s good for the runway. WSJ: What were your favorite handbags?Tina: It’s all about art deco for Ralph Lauren. Sick. It was like 1920s Shanghai at the height of its glamour, that’s what the collection was to me. A lot of jade and appliqués. Beautiful. The attention to detail on the bags–I have not seen that in a long time, not from American designers. It’s going to change the scope of his accessory business.Kelly: I’m interested to see the prices. It seems like their bags are a little bit out of reach for most people and it would be nice to have a nicer price point so that it’s accessible.WSJ: What style of bag do you think is hot for fall?Kelly: It’s all about the messengers. Everybody needs to get themselves a nice messenger. Not only is it practical, it’s very chic.WSJ: What tips do you have for WSJ readers on buying a bag?Tina: If you live in a city like New York or Chicago, you should go shopping for your shoulder bag in your heaviest coat. Usually, you buy a great bag wearing a little dress and then the winter comes and it doesn’t stay on over your coat. Also, wear a tank top under the coat, so you can take it off so you can make sure the shoulder strap doesn’t hurt your shoulder.

Marc Jacobs JJ Patent-Leather Corsage Clutch (Prom Queen Worthy)

I would feel like a prom queen every night of the week if I carried this clutch! I’m seeing pure retro glamour, thanks to the glossy stamped leather and gleaming “corsage” starburst – as no prom night ensemble would be complete without a corsage (and a tiara of course but I have that covered, I’ve been collecting and wearing tiaras for years). At first glance, it reads ultra-ornamental, but this bag is deceptively practical. Function is all in the details. At 9″ long, it’s a good-sized clutch, and with a leather shoulder strap on the detachable chain-link strap, it’s easy on bare shoulders. Savvy design and a wallop of whimsy – it’s the best of both worlds. Just keep your jewels minimal (very difficult for me as you all know I love sparkly stuff) and the rest of your look simple; you don’t want to look like you’re actually en route to junior prom.Marc Jacobs JJ Patent-Leather Corsage Clutch

Tod’s Fall 2011 Bags: The Lady Goes Downtown

Tod’s is known for impeccable workmanship and quality leathers (hand stitched, suede driving loafers, anyone?), but I would never have called it cutting-edge or hip ten years ago. Enter American designer Derek Lam, named creative director in 2006, who single-handedly changed the landscape of the Italian luxury brand. He has merged Tod’s classic appeal with a needed youthful vibe. As we have already been observing, Fall 2011 is all about structured ladylike bags, and Tod’s versions get it just right. Color and lightheartedness are infused with the best skins available to offer pristine structure and intriguing combinations (wristlet clutch in canary yellow lizard and slate gray python is a winning combo in my book!). And the drool worthy camel crocodile shoulder bag, Lam’s take on what a luxury brand customer desires, is “witty, unpretentious, and stand for the heritage of a beautifully made product.” I would say that Derek Lam knows a thing or two of what bag snobs want, and Tod’s Fall 2011 bags are exactly it.

Prada Fall 2011

What was odd about Miuccia’s runway show Thursday was that, despite proclaiming a new girlish innocence for her woman, the models encapsulating this aura seemed filled with anxiety. No more was that more evident than in the way they clutched and almost manhandled their bags. Rush, rush, rush they did down the runway. The bag shapes are petite, soft and malleable and plenty roomy for fall. Like the clothes, they have a somewhat sixties Mod vibe to them–note the oversized buckles and leather handle pieces. Again, my overall conclusion is one of disappointment with this bag collection. It’s been a long time since a Prada bag collection has bowled me over; will this dry spell ever end?

Lanvin Fall 2011 Bags

Exuding pure and timeless glamour, Lanvin’s women looked as though they stepped out of a noir thriller– mysterious femme fatales with sexy secrets to keep. Their bags generally were the most straightforward aspect of their looks (eye-obscuring, wide-brimmed hats and cape-like coats, anyone?). One luxe, ladylike, structured handbag appeared after another. Boxier than most as of late, they directly matched the palette of the clothing, in neutral colors– mink brown, inky gray, and honeyed camel. The sensational, sparkly clutches, on the other hand, were little bejeweled treasures worthy of a fairy tale. If you’re going to glitter, do it in Lanvin. Either way, sharp brown leather or encrusted with crystals, Elbaz is a genius who knows what women want in their opera-gloved hands. (Love him, he is the joyful master oozing with love, not hate!)

Etro Suede and Snakeskin Clutch: Etro Brings Retro

I have been on a vintage binge lately and when I first saw this Etro clutch I did a double take and had to make sure I was indeed and not a vintage site. This is, without a doubt, one of the most interesting bags I have seen in a long time (and if you knew how many bags I look at weekly you’d tell me to give myself a raise). The vintage-inspired, bold graphic print is a tad psychedelic, with a kind of Jimi Hendrix rocker vibe. Most of all, with scalloped edges and multiple colors framing the snakeskin panel, it is eye-catching. The mix of python and suede screams luxury, the color combination is retro yet modern, and even the chain strap is an unusually sleek shape. At 9″ wide it will actually fit more than a credit card and cell phone. I could see hot model Abbey Lee Kershaw, who exudes flower-child chic, rocking this with a long dress, fur jacket, and eclectic jewels. On Net-A-Porter for $1,350.Pair with: The Tribal Spike Cuff by au courant designer Pamela Love matches the clutch’s funkiness and wild, curvy shapes. Don’t be afraid – this piece demands a daring bracelet. On Ssense for $645.

DKNY Fall 2011 Runway Bags: Color Me Mod

The DKNY girl is on top of the trends, and for this collection, edgier than the brand’s shows of late and appropriately nicknamed “New York Mods,” she proved she’s even ahead of the curve. For fall, this savvy shopper is all about color. Pinks and reds clashed in a most agreeable manner and were accompanied by multihued bags (one in black, blue, and tomato stood out). Whether it is a neon sweater with contrasting clutch or a pair of bold red pants with a complimentary color-blocked clutch, she is ready and willing to go for it.Bags, small and compact, were accessorized with large tassel charms – bestowing a dose of attitude – and convenient bands for hand support. Glossy, dark blue fingernails matched the navy-centric clutches, while fresh white manicures offset the brights and blacks. This new mod knows how to incorporate the latest runway looks into her everyday wardrobe, without breaking the bank and with stylish nails to match. Can’t wait for fall? Check out current season goodies m now. We are collaborating with DKNY on an exciting project to be announced soon. Stay tuned!

Marc Jacobs Baroque Quilting Minetta Shoulder Bag: The Classic Chanel

This is the Chanel bag for the younger set (as in you baby bag snobs born around 1990). You get the quilted leather and chain-strapped elegance of La Chanel, without going all out. Not that this isn’t a truly luxurious piece. The golden hammered hardware is eye-catching, while soft taupe leather is neutral and easy – and dark enough that it can take a bit of a beating without automatically appearing shabby. The pair of handheld and shoulder-strap handles is much appreciated. I am loving all the optional top handles on bags lately! They seem to be ubiquitous. Designers have learned that a girl needs her options. As far as options go, this bag is one every young lady should have in her collection. At Saks Fifth Avenue for $1,295.Pair with: The name of these shorts says it all. Bec & Bridge’s “Wild & Free” high-waisted, zebra-print, modified culottes are for the young at heart and firm of thigh. On ShopBop for $180.

Stella McCartney Soft Raffia Iris Shoulder Bag: A Pure Spring Bag, for the Pure-Hearted Animal Lover

A bag that is both PETA- and Bag Snob-approved does not come along often. While it can be hard to reconcile spending a solid chunk of change on bag that involves only faux leather, Stella McCartney‘s Iris bag is so pristine and sophisticated that I can’t resist. Yet another example of color-blocking with muted shades, the tan trim (in mock vachetta leather) makes the raffia center, a refreshing white, snap in a way that’s pleasingly geometric. The buckle, on the adjustable shoulder strap, and trademark Stella plate offset the chasteness of the bag, adding just enough interest. Natalie Portman will be very happy (though I’m not sure how well it will function as a diaper bag). Sleek and refined, plus cruelty-free. Vegans – and snobs – rejoice! At Saks Fifth Avenue for $1045.Pair with: Keep it clean and modern with Gianvito Rossi’s beige leather open-toe clogs. And you get your true leather fix. Sorry, Stella! At Montaigne Market for $653.

Barbara Bui Jules Messenger Bag

Every neutral ensemble should integrate a splash of color, so why shouldn’t your bag? Barbara Bui’s lovely suede shoulder bag has a slouchy feel and a couple of colorful surprises – a pop of purple suede trim on the internal side zip pocket and dusty-rose satin lining. While it’s not technically a messenger since it doesn’t go cross-body, the “Jules” makes up for practicality with fabulous internal organization (three compartments in all with the center zipper).Actually, this bag has more flair than it should: the big tassel is a bit too much for me, tipping the balance of a perfectly minimal style. Luckily, it comes off, along with the dog tag – not a huge distraction but I’d probably remove them both. Details abound, and my favorite is the flat’s leather trim with turn-lock closure. A go-with-everything piece, but – hate to say it – that suede is not going to wear well. Barbara BuiJules Messenger Bag On FarFetch for $1060.Pair with: A neutral shoe with hot details, too. Lanvin’s halter slice calfskin wedge ($1,415) has touches of woven brown grosgrain and an angled wooden panel on the heel.

Delvaux Givry MM Shoulder Bag: Solid Gold Oldie

If you use the words “demure” and “classic” to describe your personal style, I challenge you to find a more appropriate bag. Delvaux has been making leather goods for nearly 200 years (since 1829, to be precise), and no one does quintessential quiet luxury like them. So many designers claim not to care about trends; always-timeless Delvaux has a proven track record that they genuinely don’t. A bag of theirs is like a natural beauty who doesn’t rely on makeup: everyone wants to look like her, and no one can quite fake it. This belle of a bag, in santiag polo leather, has an element of surprise: it’s actually a double foldover, so your stuff stays secure when the buckle is undone. Good thing because threading that tab every time I want to reach for something would get on my nerves. And the venerable label has kept up with the times – the Basane leather inside comes with a cell phone pocket. All that, plus a super-adjustable strap, so you can have the bag flirt at your side or hips, depending on mood and need. A natural beauty that’s easy to work with – how rare is that? At Barneys New York for $2,075.Pair with: What would be better than a Dior dress? A leafy jungle print and bold colors on cotton poplin will make that white leather go “snap!” At Saks Fifth Avenue for $2,300.

Osklen for Runway to Green Salmon-Skin Mini Tote: Onwards and Upstream

Did you ever think you could have your sushi and eat it, too? With rising costs of python and crocodiles, fish skin is rapidly becoming a shoe-and-bag favorite for designers: Emporio Armani has used tilapia, Dolce & Gabbana toyed with marine eel, and Derek Lam‘s Fall 2011 accessories collection welcomed perch-skin.Osklen takes eco-efficiency to another level with their tasteful salmon-skin tote; shockingly sleek and dark-chocolate, it resembles water snake. I like it even more with a portion of the proceeds going to Runway to Green, a fundraising organization that collaborates with designers to benefit the environment.Runway to Green and Vogue rolled out the green carpet for their “A Bid to Save the Earth” second annual party on March 29th. Christie’s Auction House hosted fashion’s in-crowd for a runway show (Jason Wu, Yves Saint Laurent, Thakoon, Gucci, and others showed pieces available for immediate purchase) and a live auction. Even if you missed the party, you can still be part of the eco-friendly fashion movement by carrying Osklen’s uncommon bag. On Net-a-Porter for $970.Pair with: Be eco from tote-to-toe with Stella McCartney’s buckled faux-leather sandals, in deep burgundy with a cork heel. On Net-a-Porter for $795.

My Five Essentials: Iman

When a legendary supermodel invites you to dinner, you don’t refuse. You drop whatever you’re doing, strap on your highest pair of heels, hop in a cab, and show up, pronto. No questions asked. That’s exactly what I did on a recent evening in New York City, when I received this text from a friend: “Iman would like you to join us for dinner.”I was elated to discover she is a MAJOR bag snob: her insane collection includes the Hermès Kelly and one-of-a-kind pieces by friends Karl, Paloma, and Thierry (yes that would be Lagerfeld, Picasso and Mugler). She keeps most of her clothes with a service that cleans, maintains, and delivers when she needs them. But her bags and shoes? They stay safe in her closet! As Iman often tells her hubby David (as in Bowie), “I need to see my bags before I decide what I’m going to wear!” Hey, that’s how I get dressed, as well; Iman and I have so much in common! My instant BFF elaborated, “I read Bag Snob every day. When I discovered you, I thought I knew everything about bags and had seen it all. But you always surprise me and tempt me with new bags I didn’t know I needed!”Iman even developed her own line of bags with HSN, Iman Global Chic, because she wants to give women the opportunity to buy snob bags at an affordable price point. The bags are known to sell out like crazy – that’s 75,000 bags each time she appears on HSN!Read on for the iconic model, wife, mother, entrepreneur, and bag snob’s Five Essentials:Iman Global Chic tote bag “If you’re a mom like me, you know that having one purse that’s small enough to carry everywhere yet roomy enough to pack the essentials is a necessity. This style comes in a variety of chic colors and works with every outfit.”Iman Global Chic travel bag. “As a model and businesswoman, I am constantly traveling. Whether it’s on a short flight to Florida where I film my HSN Global Chic appearances or around the globe. Having a reliable and fashionable travel tote that fits in an overhead compartment makes my life so much easier – this style is one of my favorites and a must-have when I’m on-the-go.”Hermes Kelly Crocodile bag: “This is more than a bag…it’s a true treasure and the first gift my husband bought me on my first birthday that we were together in Paris in 1991.”Iman Global Chic trend bag: “I’m a big believer in embracing trends at the right price point – this faux snakeskin shoulder bag is fun, flirty, feminine, colorful, right on Spring trend and (the best part?) it’s just $24.”Paloma Picasso: “I love this unusual vintage Paloma Picasso evening bag – there’s nothing better than using a handbag to transition an ordinary outfit into something extraordinary. This is wearable art and I absolutely love it.”From left: Nicholas Rytting (General Manager of The Box and the Snob Gusband), Iman, and moi at dinner at Waverly Inn.

VBH on Moda Operandi: Python and Croco and Suede – Oh, My!

Snobs, we’re not in Kansas anymore. Handbag wizard and Valentino veteran Vernon Bruce Hoeksema has presented us with yet another collection of lavish and quietly sophisticated bags, for the true discerning bag snob. Perusing VBH‘s flagship store in NYC is quite the experience in itself; located in a former landmark bank, the cathedral-high ceilings and lush yet homey atmosphere just emphasizes how regal these bags are.Bruce is meticulous when it comes to selecting skins and executing styles, and his attention to detail is felt in each and every one of his functional works of art. The “Brera” is a must-have for Fall, an iconic tote that – dare I say it? – rivals the Birkin. Multiple colors and skins (tomato red, royal blue or leopard sueded python, anyone?) are juxtaposed against shiny platinum hardware. As satisfying to eye as it is to the touch, this could be the one bag to take you through the season with panache. On days you crave something daintier, the “Prive Due G” purse is a light yet buttery marriage of nude crocodile and suede. With this on your arm, you could wear jeans and a T-shirt and still be the most elegant woman in any room. But the one that really calls my name? The sleek and chic “Manila” stretch clutch in blue slate crocodile. VBH is most known for their envelope clutches, and with architectural lines and elegant personality to spare, this bag makes me crazy.Moda Operandi is offering a VBH Fall 2011 trunk show, so you can get the insider jump on the fall collection. Online for three days only (ending April 13th)! Make a 50% deposit now, and the balance is due upon the delivery of goods (Don’t ya just love the layaway plan?!). Elie Tahari “Maggie” Clutch: Proves Nude’s Not Lewd

A crisp little clutch that’s the color of a sandy beach: fab for vacationing or second best, just pretending to be on vacation locally. Sometimes you want a bag without a hint of vulgarity or drama. While this Elie Tahari bag is seductively nude, it’s as pure and clean as they come. I love how it’s not junked up with hardware – just bare bones leather-trimmed raffia with a simple tab closure. Feel free to accessorize to your heart’s content and add some weight to your look via heavy metal rings and bracelets. Concise and subdued, it’s just the thing for jeweled hands to carry on ladies lunch dates and summer night dates. Just change your garb accordingly and the bag will follow suit. On ShopBop for $348.Pair with: An ornate statement necklace brings the drama, and the sand-and-sea palette of fossilized agate and azure stones is in keeping with your naturalistic motif. Bottega Veneta Grey Striped Messenger Bag: Laid Back Luxury

I’m a huge fan of this relaxed, easy, breezy bag. The Bottega Veneta grey striped messenger is effortlessly chic with soft grey suede in a laid back slouch. The stripes bring a summertime feel to it and will allow you to dress it down with a bright yellow romper and some flats or play it up with some skinnies, red pumps and white button down. Bags like these give off the vibe that you obviously have great taste, but don’t always need a bag to jump off your arm and slap someone with its style, shape or color. Simple yet classy, this bag will take you into summer with swagger.Elyse Walker for $1,950

Alexander McQueen “Novak”: Mama’s Got a Semi-New Bag

The almost-iconic McQueen bag named after the famous blonde actress has been reissued, this time with greater commercial appeal. Thanks to deep tan and nude nubuck and a moderately altered shape, the “Novak” looks fresh again. It’s now more squared off, opposed to the original trapezoid shape, and the contrast of the curvy dark straps and the leather paneling, gives the bag a newly feminine, contoured shape – softer, less impactful, more unassuming. And no more turnlock closure – now just a simple magnetic fastening.A simple structured top handle with interesting details is easy for the masses to digest and this fluid new shape is just that. The original was a cult hit with the fashionistas, but it didn’t go further than their hands. Maybe this time the “Novak” will catch on with a broader audience. On Net-a-Porter for $1845.Pair with: A pair of Bottega Veneta peep-toe suede ankle boots with mass appeal that are universally flattering. White or brown look equally good with your updated bag.Bottega Veneta Open Toe Ankle Boot, $740.

Alexander McQueen “Oriental Samurai Skull” Silk-Satin Box Clutch: The Rise of the Samurai

Silly me. I thought I owned the most unique McQueen skull clutch around (rare metallic purple trimmed in violet South Sea pearls), but look what we have here! This has got to be the most unusual to date. A spiked-out helmet-wearing skull atop an ornate satin box clutch is borderline kitsch – but that’s a good thing. With such beautiful embroidery, it’s more high-art than oddball knickknack. Though that protruding, “don’t-mess-with-me” skull might cause concern as you navigate a crowded room – but who doesn’t want to carry a clutch that has your back? I can’t think of a better plus-one than a gleaming gold samurai buddy!A nod to the traditional Japanese fighter seems apropos at the time, as Japan is on our minds and in our hearts. Why not put some of their traditional flavor into your hands? On Net-a-Porter for $2,195.Pair with: You want to avoid looking like you’re wearing a costume, but you also need to give your bag some context. Zero + Maria Cornejo’s “Mackie” dress in woven jacquard has a loosely interpreted kimono silhouette and remains modern cocktail-ready. At Barneys New York for $820.

VBH : The LRB

That’s right: the Little Red Bag. Sometimes, the bag justifies the night. There are some wardrobe acquisitions that give you reason enough to get your girls together and plan an evening out on the town, braving the Saturday crowds and all. This petite-chic VBH shoulder bag (a diminutive 6″ wide) is adorable to tote on an evening out. Polished hardware dresses it up even more and a both adjustable and convertible strap means you can tailor your satchel to your dance moves; make it a crossbody when you really want to get down. The new disco bag motivates you to pack light – all you require are a credit card, some cash, and your cell. So make sure your makeup is impeccable and hit the road! With impeccable stitching and leatherwork, clean lines, and a sleek shape, it’s a small sacrifice to make to the handbag gods. $1,495 at FortyFiveTen- call 214-559-4510 to order!Pair with: Nothing goes with a little red bag like massive white heels – Alexander McQueen‘s in python and gold studs will put you in the spotlight all night long. Your friends might be so jealous they’ll wish they just stayed home! Alexander McQueen Cut-Out Python Booties, $2,150.

Barneys New York Strapped Tote: Black and Blue and Carried All Over

Barneys’ private label is totally giving snob-worthy designers a run for their money! I have to hand it to them – or just put this concisely chic bag in my hands, stat. Bringing depth and shape, the interlocking straps make me interested in this leather tote; so does the pairing of navy blue and black, which is so smart and modern. A traditional bag that goes against the rules: its hushed rebellion isn’t only in the color scheme. A square tote is a needed twist on the typical shape (vertical totes match your form and don’t play with it), and sometimes that’s the only design detail a bag requires. This is easy and low-maintenance – chuck all your stuff in and bring on the patterns, brights, and even the dirt. This tote can take it all. At Barneys New York for $750.Pair with: Fuchsia-pink is a risky shoe choice, but when you’re carrying a repressed-toned bag and they’re flat and unembellished like Belle Sigerson Morrison’s pointy-toed suede flats, you should go for it. On Net-a-Porter for $195.

Dsquared2 “Portland” Envelope Clutch, Yves Saint Laurent “Y” Clutch, and Alexander Wang “Jade” Trunk Wristlet: Squaring Off

Haven’t you heard that it’s hip to be square? These three sharp-edged little bags prove angular is where it’s at when it comes to of-the-moment clutches. The keen lines and cool stiffness of Dsquared2′s lush chestnut envelope (crisply business-appropriate), Yves Saint Laurent’s sunlit metallic bronze clutch (to bring even more heat to summer nights), and Alexander Wang’s funky stingray and rose-gold box (heavy on hardware, easy on the eyes) prove petite clutches don’t have to be fussy or feminine. Instead, these will put a touch of tough-girl chic right into your hands. Just don’t overdue your sharp shapes and wear your square with soft and loose palazzo pants to juxtapose the look.Dsquared2 “Portland” Envelope Clutch On Ssense for $715.Yves Saint Laurent “Y” Clutch On Ssense for $695.Alexander Wang “Jade” Trunk Wristlet On Ssense for $795.Pair with: Lover’s high-waisted ivory twill pant, Altuzarra’s navy trouser, and Opening Ceremony’s pleated embroidered silk pair all have fluid lines and the pillowy shape these hard-cornered bags call for.Lover High-Waisted Twill Wide-Leg Pants On Net-a-Porter for $370.

Botkier “Isla” Shoulder Bag: La Isla Bonita

Here we have your quintessential everyday shoulder satchel with enough subtle highlights to make it anything but typical. Just look closely and you’ll see what I mean. The wrinkled leather has a hint of metallic sheen to it, for a delicate sparkle that catches both the light and your eyes. With an extremely flat silhouette, it hangs attractively on your side, rather than protruding bulbously, and there’s major attention to organization inside: a center zip compartment gives the interior two sections and there are countless pockets all inside the lining for all your little things. The focal point? I probably don’t have to tell you it’s the keyhole cutout serving as the button tab closure – finishing this bag off with the interests it needs. On ShopBopfor $395.Pair with: Multiple braided straps and buckles elevate a strappy shoe to a high point of outfit intrigue. Sometimes, a girl just needs simplicity in her life. A canvas bag with leather trim, and all the organization one needs to feel in control, can be quite a powerful thing. You will not be making any fashion statements here but that is not the day you use this. The always refreshing combo of natural canvas and leather sets the calm mood for hectic days – either travel or maybe just a day filled with annoying errands can be done with effortless style. Take the strap off and you have a summer clutch, what can be easier than that? Those interior pockets are seriously the bomb, they look really cool set against such a slim bag. At Luisaviaroma $861.

Milla Jovovich in Sergio Rossi

Cannes Film Festival is like the 12 days of Christmas for the fashion industry. Each day, a parade of primped and coiffed celebs glide down the runway (I mean red carpet) offering plenty of fodder for gawkers and fashion bloggers alike.I only comment on the stand outs and today, Milla Jovovich caught my eye in an unexpected color-blocked gown from Prada. Even more intriguing, however, was the minaudiere dangling from her shoulder from Sergio Rossi. I love the long shoulder/crossbody chain trend on the red carpet– it allows one a nonchalant and elegant pose, unlike posing with a clutch (there is the football hold, the clutch it like a baby stance or dangle gingerly from your fingers– I have tried all three and trust me, equally awkward). This stunner is from Sergio Rossi‘s “Red Carpet Limited Edition Minaudiere” in Red Satin trimmed with Swarovski Crystal Butterfly Trim. Add flawless hair, bold red lips and we have a 10+ red carpet look in my book. What do you think of the look?

Tory Burch Synthetic Straw Shoulder Bag: Grasping at Straws

Think of summer and what comes to mind before a straw bag? Tory Burch’s synthetic straw (no wheat died for this!) shoulder bag is just the way I like my flax. With metallic silver leather trim, this is no country bumpkin’s picnic purse. It’s a hot city handbag! Tina gave me a straw-and-silver bag years ago, and every summer I dig it out of my closet because it always fills a need. A classic shoulder bag never goes out of style, so even if it’s purely seasonal, trust me, you will get annual use. This one is even Frugal Snob-approved, so it’s easy to justify the single-season purchase. Burch’s lightly structured bag has a thick, comfortable, no-slip shoulder strap with silver chain details that allow versatility. You don’t have to be in island wear; it’s equally suited for the office or the evening out. And you’ve gotta love that pocket under the flap: my new essential feature. I’ll never miss another call or text again! But don’t worry, Tina. It won’t replace yours. These two straw sisters will just take turns! At Nordstrom for $350.Pair with: A straw bag looks kind of funky with high-waisted and lightly flaired retro jeans. Mother’s baby blues are the perfect shade with precision fit. Mother “The Drama” High-Rise Wide-Leg Jeans, $220.

Reece Hudson No. 9 Handle Bag: Birds of a Feather…

What could be better than a quilted white bag to welcome the lazy days of summer? That would be a quilted white OSTRICH bag! Add crocodile to the patchwork equation and you have the most dynamic summertime bag for miles. Reece Hudson‘s No. 9 Handle bag is deceptively simple in its design yet rich in details. From the decadent mishmash of ostrich quills to the ostrich leg skin to the fabulously seamed blend of crocodile, this bag has more than textural intrigue – white-hot (multiple) animal magnetism. It is pieced together like a chevron puzzle – so much so that I stared at it a full five minutes and kept seeing something new every few seconds. The flap with silver bar is not only aesthetically pleasing but very functional (would love it if the bar clasp was a flashlight pen – wouldn’t that be genius?!). Now this is a bag I wouldn’t mind investing in! And don’t be intimidated: white ostrich is no higher maintenance than white leather. Just send it to a leather specialist once a year, and you’ll be fine – that is, after a long summer of enjoying every expertly-stitched inch of it. At Kirna Zabête for $4,400.Pair with: Skin is in, but it must be balanced out. The “Philosophy” pinstripe pencil skirt by Vivienne Westwood in summer-light wool with flamboyantly cut fabric complements the bag by contrasting it. At Net-a-Porter for $380.

Diane von Furstenberg “Elaine” Photographer and Carryall Bags: Don’t Leave Home Without Her

Diane von Furstenberg bags keep getting better and in these two new “Elaine” styles, they have never looked so good. The Photographer bag ($695), in wine or black pebble leather, is a slick two-in-one. With a flick of a strap and a turn of the lock, you can basically double or halve the size. And it has none of the perfunctory aspects of most convertible bags; I love how the front pocket flap seamlessly incorporates the turn-lock design. It should be called the “urban nomad” satchel – it’s especially handy in walking cities where your bag is your Range Rover and you need to carry a spare pair of flats at all times. All the bells and whistles, including a sassy tassel, without looking busy. For the more understated snob, an easy style in a color that’s packed with personality. Lush “lawn” green is definitely the color for me. The Carryall ($650) doesn’t have the foldable function, but it’s equally user-friendly, with an easy shape and pockets galore, inviting you to thrown in all your necessities. The zipped front-pocket function is where I’ll be tucking in all my receipts. Indeed, the “Elaine” bags are ideal for a long day of heavy shopping!

Miu Miu Intreccio Shoulder Bag: Woven Wonder

I totally dig this multi-colored treasure. The Miu Miu woven leather bag with a sweet jeweled strap is a sweet summer sack to throw over your shoulder for a night out or a day at your kid’s friend’s birthday party that you were suckered into helping out at last minute.Bags like this are perfect for warm weather. They are bright, fresh and fun and compliment summer outfits like this sweet pink silk romper paired with some metallic sandals or some scalloped shorts (love) a tank and a blazer for a more polished look that still looks seasonal. With the woven colors, this bag will be easy to play up with many different looks, but be prepared to get a lot of wear out of it if you want to justify the price. It will set you back $1,495 at Bergdorf’s. However, it is summer, throw caution to the wind and get your weave on girl.

Christopher Kane Laser-Cut Leather Clutch: Flashing Lights

Renegade designer Christopher Kane has a major thing for neon (other colors bore him, he says), and who can blame him, really? Even if you don’t want to wear – or carry – something so gaze-searingly hot, it’s a pick-me-up just to take in these undeniably happy colors. While the head-to-toe DayGlo looks from his Spring collection were a bit too “Fruit Stripe gum” for my taste, these little pouch clutches will add just the right amount of snap, crackle, and pop to an otherwise neutral outfit (keep everything else nude and subdued to avoid any hint of cheesiness). Acid yellow gets my vote, by a long shot. Soft calf leather literally looks like lace when it has been laser-cut with this much delicacy. Let’s thank Christopher Kane for his dedication for all things blazingly bright, and consider infusing just a touch on his behalf. Neon yellow, Neon green, Neon-orange on Net-A-Porter for $530.

Yves Saint Laurent Chyc Cabas: Rock the Cabas

Calling all snobs! There’s an official new “It” bag in town, from Los Angeles to New York. Noticed a suspiciously similar roomy tote hanging from the forearms of noted style-setters like Sienna Miller, Leighton Meester, Kylie Minogue, and Carla Bruni and glamorous starlets such as Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Salma Hayek?Ah, the age-old question of what makes an “It” bag. The answer? It’s the right combination of structure and lack thereof; ease that can be appropriated to any knowing woman’s wardrobe, whether she’s ladylike or bohemian; a major statement-maker without sticking a fat logo in your face and everyone else’s.The Chyc Cabas is an adaptable carry-all that’s a city girl’s dream: sheepskin leather in a hold-everything size, multiple pockets (two outer, an inside phone and zip), and the trademark magnetic “Y” closure that spells “Yves Saint Laurent” in a single, decorative letter. Plus, a color for every personality – the neutrals: olive-tinted sand, shiny black, grayish brown and the wilds: juicy magenta, punchy blue, and leopard. Available at Yves Saint Laurent and to be available at Saks Fifth Avenue, for $1,995.

Diego Dolcini Suede and Silk Shoulder Bag: Blue Lagoon

Even if he didn’t reinvent the wheel, Diego Dolcini proves you can show heaps of flair in the attempt. All the classics are here – turn-lock closure, ladylike shape, chain straps – and these borrowed elements have been melded to perfection. Suede complimented by a strip of silk amounts to soothing texture, the fastening is sharply minimal enough for the brand to call the closure its own, and the chains have surprisingly large, loose links. As a matter of fact, the straps are my least favorite aspect of the bag, but for strictly personal reasons. I’m not too keen on the slack link look – fumbling with flaccid yet heavy straps becomes a hassle when I’m opening the bag and this strap doubles over, so metal weight is an added concern. But the lambent deep azure color makes up for the weight. It’s really the main attraction – a turquoise this dazzling is a permanent breath of fresh air, so you’ll never tire of this purchase no matter how many seasons pass. On Luisa Via Roma for $1,120.Pair with: Let your textured blue bag shine and keep shoes neutral. Roberto Cavalli‘s golden cage sandals have straps that are as intricate and demure as the shoe is sexy. Roberto Cavalli Patent-Leather Cage Sandals, $755.

Bottega Veneta Frayed Intrecciato Leather Bag: Wild at Heart

Bottega Veneta has really been letting loose lately. Literally! This ladylike bag from the pre-fall collection has been sliced and sheared all along the edges for a savagely deconstructed look. I’ll admit I was a little taken aback at first: who would have expected something so untamed? But then I realized that the blend of soft and sharp, tight and loose makes for a bag that’s kind of like you: refined and classy, with a wild streak. A major element of surprise.A perfectly buttery leather body offsets the tattered edges even more and muted gunmetal hardware, rather than too-shiny gold or silver, emphasize the fact that the label is flaunting its dark side. Bottega traditionalists might be outraged to see the house has started to destroy their own impeccable weave, but I’m appreciating the fact that they are getting in touch with the feral nature of gorgeous skins. On Net-a-Porter for $2,280.Pair with: Remind them you still maintain an angelic side with Emilio Pucci’s dangling angel-wing earrings. Gold-tone brass encrusted with glass crystals will also bring some metallic bling. On Net-a-Porter for $390.

Tory Burch Gwendolyn Patterned Bucket Tote: Slob or Snob?

This tote confuses me. At first glance, I like the patterned straw in the bucket shape with little tassles on the end. It looked beachy and laid back and I thought it might work with something like a Blue Life maxi and some simple matching Tory Burch flops to the pool on a lazy Saturday afternoon. However, in taking a closer look I’m afraid the round bucket shape just looks weird with such short handles. I also think this would be hard to carry if you had anything more than lip gloss and a pack of gum in it. I think this takes “bucket bag” a little too literally and I would feel like I should stick a shovel in it and give it to the kids I nanny to go nuts making sandcastles with it.The handles make this bag less snob and more impractical snob to me, but what do you guys think? It’s currently sold out @ Shopbop with a price tag of $367.50, so someone out there likes it!What do you think? Slob or Snob?online surveys

Yves Saint Laurent Opyum Flap Bag: Follow the Golden Brick Road

Yves Saint Laurent has just proven that “ladylike” and “cute” are not mutually exclusive! I love the sophisticated yet jaunty shape of the “Opyum” bag. As always, I’m not wild about the shoulder strap option, but the thick top handle, complete with appealing hardware, more than makes up for it. Not only does it give the bag a strong retro feel, the handle adds balance so it’s not too dainty. With an interior offering two full-sized compartments, as well as a cell phone pocket, it has your organization covered.A pert tab closure stretching up from the bottom acts as the focal point (notice the discreetly stiched “Y”). Or maybe the grainy pebble leather steals the spotlight. It might be a tad too coarse for me, but enhanced texture is essential on such an otherwise simple bag. It almost looks like a play on stingray skin or oversized caviar…or gravel. But the gold tone makes it glisten, so just relish the texture. At Saks Fifth Avenue for $2,295.Pair with: Have some chocolate with your pebbly golden foil. Michael Kors‘ stainless steel watches, in the new tone of “chocolate” bring some soft masculinity to the table. Michael Kors Stainless Steel Chronograph Watches, $250.

Balmain Abroad Chain Shoulder Bag: Balmain or Bust

Do you want the good news or the bad news first? Since I’m an optimist, here goes. The good news is Balmain‘s obscene prices finally seem to be slipping. The bad news is their bags still look like they were pulled out of Forever 21 or the local mall. (If this one doesn’t have you convinced, check out last year’s exposed zipper satchel. Or 2010′s oddly un-edgy clutch. Overdone and overpriced? No, thank you!)I have seen the bags up-close and personal, and they are just not on par with Balmain’s ready-to-wear. Where is the ironic flash, the rock star panache, the swish and snap? Because all I’m seeing here is a shiny calfskin shoulder bag with a wavy, whip-stitched flap front and an unremarkable chain strap. Hopefully, under the charge of new (and super-hot) creative director, Olivier Rousteing, Balmain will get its accessories right, once and for all. At Neiman Marcus for $865.

Vanessa Bruno Suede Shoulder Bag: Wear to Love, Love to Wear

Vanessa Bruno – think of her as Isabel Marant’s cousin in the family of Parisian über-cool – has just whipped up a thoroughly mint bag. Meet the new look: the hobo-tote hybrid (the hobote?!). Her suede shoulder bag boasts all the conveniences of both with the lure of freshness. Slick with some structure at the frame, then relaxed with a bit of slouch through the midsection. The key is the shoulder-strap placement: it is placed so the satchel holds its shape and doesn’t collapse on itself when you put in on your shoulder. But it’s the tab closure that’s the focal point. Oversized and easy to deal with, it gives you the carefree option of leaving it open without flapping in your way. I love the terra-cotta color, but suede will always worry me. “New” can turn “old” in a heartbeat. Suede seems like a good idea until you’ve had it for a while and then you notice it has started to bald and fray. This new bag is such a great fall piece – just be extra-nice to it so it doesn’t get ruined! On Net-a-Porter for $650.Pair with: A pair of Marant‘s quintessential “Dicker” boots, a Western style that shows no sign of slowing down, and you’ve doubled up on soft suede and French hip. At Barneys New York for $560.

Alexander McQueen Leopard Pony Clutches: Hop on the Pony Express

How could such obvious, undeniable, eternal clutch perfection only be occurring now? Not that I’m complaining; I’m just thrilled that these Alexander McQueen bags are finally here. Animal print is sophisticated no matter how you look at it and pony hair is a tactile delight any day of the year. Put them together, imbue some famous McQueen edge, and I’m simply beaming.Leopard-print pony is candy to my eyes, and black-and-white peppered pony is even more neutral and appealing. Take your pick: The classic box clutch ($1,450) with Swarovski-detailed skull closure, quintessential McQueen. The knuckle-boxer ($2,095) with delightfully wicked jewels, a cutting-edge style that I will not tire of – rings attached to my clutch? Yes, please! The wildly angled “De-Manta” style ($525), with a refined-feral pattern as singular as the shape – I think we have a winner. These clutches could not be more spot on if they tried.

Anya Hindmarch Nevis Raw Leather Tote Bag: Nice Easy

Reworked into a more relaxed shape, the already ultra-functional “Nevis” tote has been taken a step beyond. I used the original nylon “Nevis” as a diaper bag and passed it down to my sister who loved it as much as I did. But in no way is Anya Hindmarch‘s raw leather uprade, with a higher level of tailoring and more streamlined straps, any diaper bag in disguise. This organic-esque tote, with extra-large outer pockets (the old “Nevis” has patch pockets on the front and back, giving it a utilitarian diaper-bag look) is a sleek and elegant carryall. The thick, flat straps (also new and I wish the older version had them) are comfy on the shoulder, and they also add to the purified look. This is slouchy luxury – the way it opens up extra-wide, along with the simplicity of the handles – that looks all-natural, via the hide-like leather and raw-cut pockets. A no-brainer bag for the busy girl on the go. At Saks Fifth Avenue for $895.Pair with: Give off low-maintenance vibes with a deliberately baggy striped tee. Bassike‘s semi-sheer organic cotton top hangs with the same ease with which you’ll carry your tote. On Net-a-Porter for $195.

Gucci “Broadway” Evening Bag: Virtually Mine

Suddenly, making a purchase based on a website photo seems so passé! Gucci is taking the virtual experience up a notch, with their sensuous new video. I tested out the interactive video – part editorial in motion, part ad, part clickable catalog – for you all, and I’m happy to report: it works great! Shopping via video is the next best thing to being at the boutique. When you have It-girls Abbey Lee Kershaw and Joan Smalls slinking around to show off the goods, I’m pretty much sold.In truth, it’s very helpful to see all the angles of the product before committing to purchase. Like with the studded “Broadway” clutch, a harder take on the classic horse-bit. in Abbey Lee’s hands you get to see what how truly elongated the rectangle-shape is, and the close-up on the lush leather shows off its high quality. Even if you don’t need all the bells and whistles of a dramatic video, at the very least it’s entertaining – and you might pick up a few styling ideas while you choose your new bag.Check out video here. At Gucci for $950.

She has designed a fabulous tote bag emblazoned with this powerful slogan under the equally meaningful symbol of Japan’s flag.
